About Blacktown

Blacktown as a State Electoral District shares its name with the suburb, and council within its borders in Western Sydney. It was first proclaimed in 1941. Blacktown’s first elected state MP was Francis Hill who held the seat from 1941—1945.

Blacktown is on the traditional land of the Darug Aboriginal people.

Blacktown City local government area is one of the most diverse communities in the world, with people from over 180 cultures speaking over 185 languages calling Blacktown home. Blacktown’s multi-cultural community play an important role in adding to the vibrancy and economic development of our area.

The electorate of Blacktown is a diverse area and home to many fabulous tourist attractions and activities for the whole family including Featherdale Wildlife Park; Sydney Zoo; home of international motor racing with Sydney Premier Karting Park. Sydney Motorsport Park, Sydney Dragway and Eastern Creek Speedway; the Leo Kelly Arts Centre; Nurragingy Reserve; Chang-Lai Yuan Gardens; Nurrangingy Miniature Railway; Blacktown Showground; and the former Olympic Centre and now premier sports grounds for Baseball and Softball; and Bowman Hall (Gough Whitlam MP (Prime Minister 1972-75) dubbed as his Temple of Victories). Blacktown City is also home to the A-League football club Western Sydney Wanderers.

Blacktown has been previously represented by:

  • Francis Hill (1941-45)
  • John Freeman MBE (1945-59). He was awarded a MBE in 1968
  • Alfred Dennis (1959-62)
  • Jim Southee (1962-71). He also represented the seat of Mount Druitt (1971-73)
  • Gordon Barnier (1971-81)
  • Hon. John Aquilina AM (1981-91) and later as the Member for Riverstone (1991-2011); served as various Minister portfolios and Speaker of the NSW Legislative Assembly (2003-07)
  • Hon. Pamela Allan (1991-99), who was also Blacktown’s first Female MP and the Minister for the Environment from 1995 to 1999.
  • Paul Gibson (1999-2011); and
  • Hon. John Robertson (2011-17); served as Minister and NSW Labor Leader (2011-2014)
